AFRICAN VILLAGE

The Concept

The vast continent of Africa is so rich and diverse in its culture. Much of Africa's cultural activity centres on the family and the ethnic group. Art, music, and oral literature serve to reinforce existing religious and social patterns. Africa was the birthplace of the human species between 8 million and 5 million years ago.

 

Your group will have a chance to experience and understand a little of this African Culture. The group will be divided into smaller teams with each team having a different role to play in our African village. The morning session will see our teams learning about their specific role in the village. Each team will have traditional tribal people working with them, explaining and showing the groups their various roles. The afternoon session will be filled with teams preparing a traditional meal, brewing traditional drink, constructing a hut, creating music and art as well as understanding the religion and spiritual side of the village. A hussling, bussling village at work!

 

In our final evening session each team will have a chance to show their creation, explain their function in the village and exhibit their wares.

Village Roles may include:

Music: Experiment with traditional African Instruments including the drums and provide the group with musical entertainment and rhythm for the evening.

Traditional drink: Using the traditional ingredients, this team has a big responsibility!

Weapons Today, as in the past, African men may wear swords, knives, spears, and other weapons for display to indicate their status. Swords served as emblems of authority as far back as the 15th century. This team will have all the tools necessary to make traditional weapons.

Traditional Healing – This team will learn about the power of bones, witchdoctors and herbs. They will then have to do their own gathering of choice items in order to do village readings later.
